Corning West High New Year’s Day Parade
1. The Corning-Painted Post West High Marching Band contains 195 students comprised of instrumentalists, color guards, and majorettes. They represent nearly 20% of the 1002 students at West High.
2. The band has been invited to march at the 25th anniversary of the London New Year’s Day Parade on January 1, 2011.
3. Bands are chosen based on the recommendation of bands that have previously marched at the event.
4. Fewer than 20 marching bands from the United States will be participating in the January 1, 2011 event and West High will be the only band to represent New York State.
5. The parade is billed as the largest street event of its kind in the world and is staged to raise funds for London Charities.
6. The parade has about 10,000 participants representing 20 countries and attracts about million spectators along the parade route. Nearly 220 million people will watch three hours of live satellite coverage beamed around the world to almost 750 stations. Major broadcasters such as the BBC, CNN, Fox news, SKY and CBS are expected to cover the event. The 2010 and 2011 events are planned to be broadcast locally on WYDC Big Fox.
7. The parade covers a 2.2 mile route beginning at Parliament Square near Big Ben in Westminster, passing Nelson’s Column, continuing to Trafalgar Square, down Regents Street, along Piccadilly Circus, finally ending at Green Park.
8. The objective of this trip would be to provide an international education experience for students that otherwise may never have a chance to travel abroad.
9. The seven day trip includes student visits to Stonehenge, Roman ruins in Bath, Birthplaceof Shakespeare at Stratford on Avon, Oxford University, a London Theatre Show, and Canterbury & Dover, amongst others.
10. The dates of travel would be roughly December 27, 2010 - January 3, 2011.
11. The Band Aides organization is a large group of active and talented band parents that provide moral, logistical, and financial support to the band directors and students.
12. The approximate cost per Student, excluding passport expenses, is $3000, bringing the total cost of the trip to approximately $600,000 if approximately 200 students participate.
